Because obeying God makes sense to us, in most cases, His laws appear reasonable and wise, and even when we don't want to obey them, we usually concede that they are good for us. But the circumstances we find ourselves in often defy explanation. When unexpected situations arise that appear unjust, irrational, or even dreadful, we feel confused and frustrated. And before long, we begin to doubt God's concern for us or His control over our lives.

Adversity is hard to endure and can even be harder to understand. If God were really in control, why would He allow the tragic auto accident or crucial job loss? How could He permit cancer in a loved one or the death of a child? Grappling with His concern for us we ask, "Why is God allowing this?" or "What have I done wrong?"

In an effort to strengthen his own trust in God during a time of adversity, Jerry Bridges began a lengthy Bible study on the topic of God's sovereignty. What he learned changed his life, and he now shares the fruit of that study with you in Trusting God.

As you begin to explore the scope of God's power over nations, nature, and the detailed lives of individuals, you'll begin to acknowledge His loving control. And as you come to know Him better, you'll find yourself trusting Him more completely - even when life hurts.

Trusting God (Audible Audio Edition) Jerry Bridges John Haag christianaudiocom Books

This is by far one the most influential books, and author I have read during my life. I bought this for every member in my family and they all loved it as well. Jerry does an incredible job of taking top shelf concepts and puts them low enough for anyone to grasp. He has influenced countless lives through his books and years of personal disciple making with The Navigators. He traveled and spoke about preaching the Gospel to yourself up until the day he died in 2016.

Jerry lays a Biblical foundation for trusting God in every circumstance in life. He speaks highly of Gods sovereignty and goodness toward those in Christ. Jerry addresses various areas every Christian struggles to trust God with, suffering, salvation, your heart, others hearts, Gods goodness and faithfulness, failing health and even the weather. Trusting God (Audible Audio Edition) Jerry Bridges John Haag christianaudiocom Books Reviews

I really appreciate how the author talks about God's sovereignty honestly and gently without beating me over the head with it (like other books on the topic that I will not name here). I felt comforted by it rather than not. However, the book didn't make me emotional. This isn't a bad thing in and of itself, but it does mean I didn't connect with the subject matter at a level other than intellectual. Not necessarily a problem with the book since emotions are personal, but it is the reason it's only a 4 for me
This book is outstanding. It came recommended by my pastor who suggested it even though he did not know that I have difficulty trusting God at times. Then again, I think it is safe to say that most have difficulty trusting Him at one time or another.

This is essentially about the providence and sovereignty of God. In learning to trust God it is important to understand who He is, and because of who God is (sovereign and provident) I can trust Him. He knows all. He sees all. The more a person gains a clearer understanding of God's sovereignty and providence, the more liberating and freeing it is to trust Him. Sovereignty has to do with God’s authority and power while providence is the means by which He governs all things both here and in the universe. Because He is both, I can trust Him with everything that happens to me. Believe me when I say that trusting God is not always easy to do (for me anyway). I have been a Christian for over 30 years. Reading this book was timely when I recently went through a personal trial that literally forced me to ‘trust’ God and also trust that He would work all things out when it appeared out of control. Jerry’s book has been comforting and very helpful while going through this time. It has also expanded my view of who God is.
I just finished leading a group from my church (my third time) through this book. I don't know who benefits more, the people I take through this book, or myself. As far as I'm concerned the two greatest truths we as Christians should have a good grasp on are the Gospel and God's Sovereignty. There are excellent books on both these subjects, but the most practical book (in my opinion) on the latter topic is this one by Bridges.

The reason God's Sovereignty is such an important subject is that the Christian life is a life of faith in God's promises, His character, nature, and plans - all of which require our trust when we can't see what's in front of us, or why things happen the way they do. The more we know what God is really like - biblically - the more we are able to trust Him daily.

Jerry Bridges covers the following topics with biblical support, practical insight, and wise application

1) Can You Trust God?
2) Is God in Control?
3) The Sovereignty of God
4) God's Sovereignty Over People
5) God's Rule Over Nations
6) God's Power Over Nature
7) God's Sovereignty and Our Responsibility
8) The Wisdom of God
9) Knowing God's Love
10) Experiencing God's Love
11) Trusting God for Who You Are
12) Growing Through Adversity
13) Choosing to Trust God
14) Giving Thanks Always

The author provides a myriad of reasons in this book into the how, why, what, and when's involved in trusting God and His infinite trustworthiness for living the Christian life. I can't recommend this book highly enough. It's been a tremendous source of encouragement for me in incredibly tough seasons of life.
Jerry Bridges has written many books. He understands the Bible and is able to help "ordinary " people study it too. We did this book as a life group study. Everyone was impacted by it. As the leader I bought the leaders guide and it was very helpful. If you wonder where God is "when life hurts" this is the book for you. It will bring you to a place of peace no matter what you are going through when you understand God's sovereignty. I have recommended this book to many people as they are going through trials and uncertain times. His book "Pursuit of Holiness" is excellent too. This book help us along the way as my husband was and is walking through stage 4 Prostate Cancer...
