When The Gods War A Kingdom Divided Book 2 eBook Samuel Stokes SC Stokes Reviews
When I started reading When The Gods War, I was a little confused but a little intrigued. What confused me was that the author chose not include the characters from the first book until about halfway through. Instead, he built up the nations and people of the Sevalorn, who were briefly mentioned in the first book. I am actually glad that he did that because there was so much back story to the nation of Andara, The Plains of Kairon, the kingdoms of Vitaem, Tres Cidea, and Khashish, the forests of Diadri and the Dwarven Kingdom of the Everpeak. The confusion was because that was a move that I didn’t expect. Honestly, I thought that we would be seeing Syrion, Tristan, and Elaina sooner in the book…not later.
What I also liked was that there were no really bad guys. Yaneera did have a hand in all the drama and war that was started but, in her defense, she did it because she was backed into a corner by Vitaem and she would have done anything to save her people. Even if that meant aligning herself with a newcomer who promises her that he will save her. Just reading Yaneera’s thoughts and how she really didn’t like Jonas but needed him was fascinating. It made for a great read and made me alternately feel bad for her and not like her.
The storyline with Syrion and Elaina was interesting. Interesting because Elaina was trying to restore Marcus back to life (she had his soul that was entrapped in a stone) and Syrion was on a mission to find out who these Disciples are and to stop them from taking over his world. I will say that Elaina’s storyline surprised me the most because I wasn’t expecting for certain people to show themselves. There is a small clue in the beginning of the book that I overlooked but other than that, nothing was mentioned about this person. So yeah, I was surprised
Syrion’s storyline did have its surprises too but I am not going to get into his storyline too much without revealing anything. Let’s just say that it was a very bloody battle and there are certain deaths that surprised me. Like really surprised me to the point where I said “Oh no you didn’t” out loud at 11 pm
The end of the book was very anticlimactic and it ended suddenly. But, with the way it ended, I could see a book 3. The reason I say that is because there were certain storylines there was not wrapped up and I need to know what is going to happen.
**I received a free copy of this book and volunteered to review it**
I was given the opportunity to review t his Novel for which I thank Samuel Stokes.
I must say this is a universe where mythology is king so if you are a person of a one sovereign being be aware to read it that way.
With those to points out of the way. If you would like to read about a new unique fantasy world with lots of magic and battles from all sorts of diverse cultures this is a great series to delve into. I enjoyed the first book in the series I was invited to continue to read and review more. I grabbed the opportunity with gusto, but was questioning why I did as I began the first third of book 2. There were so many storyline I became quite confused with what, where and how in the book. However I can understand after I got beyond that first part of the book because boy did those many tales intertwine. By the second third was complete I was totally understood why it was done. These diverse cultures had to show why they were at war and which side that they supported and why. Of course it was the nasty gods in this universe that caused the troubles and the plot continued to thicken as the book finely began to release it's story.
There is only a few who were from book one because it was in a totally different part of this world. I was left with the impression the next book may tie even more of this world and finely make all the cultures come together, maybe even to make the gods stop pitting all against each other. However that is to Mr Stokes pleasure. I look forward to his next installment with anticipation to see how he will go about that take.
Oh another bit of stories at the end, but at this point I expected them.
It is a bit gory in spots, but they are battle scenes so it wasn't unexpected.
I wish ebooks had maps so I had to make the map in my head. Because of that it became a bit confusing on where everyone was located, but it only slightly detracted from my reading.
Many names were similar which in the beginning could add to confusion.
However I would recommend the book even with these few issues.
In a departure from the first novel of the series, this begins with a prologue establishing the universe in which the stories of Meldinar take place. We learn who rules the world, and how. The first third of the book has no fewer than seven betrayals. And our friends Tristan, Elaina, Syrion, Malus, and Linea don’t appear to be anywhere. They are apparently on another continent, so we get an entirely new story with a decidedly different focus. The fast-paced action, political intrigue, and vividly imagined story remain a constant. As the title suggests, the tale is driven not by (purely human) nobles, but by those who imagine themselves to be the gods of the universe. Dwarves make a brave appearance to preserve not only their own existence but also the tradition of the Allfather. Syrion and Eliana play an important role.
Don’t forget that foul things are also afoot with Hitomi and her Night Stalkers. They only earn a mention here, but another book is to come. If this sequel is any indication, you are going to want it. When the Gods War is a hard book to put down. You will be captivated by the excitement and enticed into the adventure. Add it to your library now!
Stokes has again started us off on a tale of heroes and legends where the action builds to an epic battle. Great read. Highly recommend.
